Turned. Pretty!

Coming up with the idea for a part is 5% of the battle…actually making the part is another 10%…getting it to work as expected is the other 75%. Use of the handlebar risers in this article, we discovered they were a 1/4″ too short, interfering with the gas tank. So we decided to iterate, this time in aluminum: (more…)

Gurella picturetaking

Not bad for a condemned Parking Garage and an iPhone 3GS (sure wish I’d had a fill flash)

Shiftless, Part II

On April 24, 2010, in Transport, by RocketSled

So I had some photos in the distant past for a shifter installation on my C4 Corvette, It’s a B&M Pro-stick, which replaced a B&M Megashifter. The first shifter was…lets just say…not the highest quality part. After a few years of extremely light use, it stopped working.

Whelp, I may not finish what I start quickly but I do get around to it eventually. Here’s the end result:

And the earlier pics, just to jog my mind:

The Carshow in which I find I’m not worthy

On July 10, 2009, in Photography, Transport, by RocketSled

dsc_3094 As will be apparent in the upcoming posts, The family and I just got done with an extended vacation in Blaine, Washington. Upon hearing that the wife and I were gearheads, the local carshow asked if we would help judge. Silly me signed up for the Rod classes (street, Rat, etc.) which happened to be the single largest represented class, with each new example looking cooler than the last. (more…)

Oneoffs: Bushings

On April 11, 2009, in Features, Hardware, Instructions, Observations, Transport, by RocketSled

dsc_2473The Suspension upgrade article mentioned, in passing, that I’ve got new bushings to install on the front suspension. Unfortunately, in order to install the new bushings, you have to remove the old bushings. Necessity is the mother of invention, and I’m here to show you a number of different ways to get the old bushings out. (more…)

C4 Corvette – Front Suspension Rebuild

On April 9, 2009, in Transport, by RocketSled

dsc_2410Last August the power steering rack on the Corvette started to sound…ill. It’s a common failure that’s picked up the name ‘moaning sickness’ (or morning sickness as it can go away when the fluid warms up) at any rate, I didn’t want to risk hurting the car so I parked it til funding permitted. The plan was to buy the rack in December…that slid to January, then February. I finally bought the rack in March and tore into the project proper. (more…)

How to cool your C4 Corvette

On April 4, 2009, in Hardware, Observations, Transport, by RocketSled

You put a BIG motor into a SMALL spot. Do you have enough Cooling?
I’m neck deep into a project that no sane person would do. I’m doing a piece by piece restoration of a C4 Corvette from the inside out. One of the main precepts of the project was to make better from stock every part I possibly could. That means more horsepower, better braking, stronger parts, and generally making the car more than competitive with the current cars available from auto manufacturers. It may be a flawed premise, but it’s my premise, and I’m sticking to it. (more…)

Belfry’s new booty, And Cadillac Controlled Differentials

On April 4, 2009, in Transport, by RocketSled

A 42 year old car, that’s spent some time at rest, will have….issues. While a mid 60′s car is pretty dead simple to work on, a new-to-you dead simple car still takes some effort to figure out. In the 250 miles or so we’ve put on the car, a noise started making itself known. It was a howl that changed with road speed, from 0-30 mph or so, until the rest of the noises at speed drowned it out. There’s no radio to turn up and drown it out, and there’s not enough sound deadener to ignore the noise. ;) (more…)
