How to make an omelette without breaking your eggs

On May 27, 2009, in Features, Instructions, Observations, by RocketSled

dsc_2582I’m one of those fathers. The ones that send their own project to the science fair. Well, actually, I’m NOT, but I think the request made of my kids seemed a little unfair for kindergartners. And I wanted them to win.

And, it struck a chord in my past. My Father died a few years ago, and this is a project he did with me, albeit when I was in Junior High. Is this how technically advanced kids are these days? That they have access to aerospace technology in kindergarten? (more…)

Tripping the Grundig Majestic

On May 13, 2009, in Features, Hardware, Observations, by RocketSled

dsc_2562smI have a blindspot. I see things and for one reason or another, I have to have it and I don’t know why. Over time, I’m seeing a pattern, in that it’s nifty things, or old things, or well preserved things, or things you don’t see anymore, or something that adds a capability to my toolbelt. (Everybody needs rouge to polish aluminum, don’t they?) (more…)

Oneoffs: Stage 8 bolts

On May 11, 2009, in Uncategorized, by RocketSled

(The following is an unpaid testimonial. I’m just a happy customer and this might solve a problem you have)

dsc_2543Oneoffs are supposed to be little light articles on something I find interesting. But even so, I am, in fact, writing this about a bolt. Really. Something that pretty much goes unnoticed, yet they hold a large portion of the world together. (more…)

Wedged Tight

On May 7, 2009, in Uncategorized, by RocketSled

I figured I’d post an update to the Corvette fall 2009 project. I hadn’t posted anything an awhile, and I figured this would be a good way to see just how many people are viewing stuff with no advertising. ;) But First, an aside: (more…)

Project FAIL (or, when to know when to quit)

On April 21, 2009, in Uncategorized, by RocketSled

dsc_2530I thought long and hard about making this post. There are plenty of hacker/mod/geek sites out there, but I’ve never seen them post failures. I figure I could hide the project…or…mention it to y’all in the hopes it brings you caution.

I have a G4 iBook. It was a great little workhorse laptop, but it’s battery wasn’t what it used to be giving up the ghost after 30 minutes. I also have a battery pack from another laptop that died a premature death. So I decided one quiet Sunday afternoon to see if I could make something out of the sum of the parts. (more…)

Oneoffs: Bushings

On April 11, 2009, in Features, Hardware, Instructions, Observations, Transport, by RocketSled

dsc_2473The Suspension upgrade article mentioned, in passing, that I’ve got new bushings to install on the front suspension. Unfortunately, in order to install the new bushings, you have to remove the old bushings. Necessity is the mother of invention, and I’m here to show you a number of different ways to get the old bushings out. (more…)

Oneoffs: Roomba gears

On April 11, 2009, in Hardware, Observations, by RocketSled

dsc_2469We live in the future. Yeah, I don’t have a flying car, but I have a _robot_ maid! Sure, it may not clean as well as a Dyson, and it’s pretty random (watching it go EVERYWHERE in the room BUT the spot with the crumbs is not for the OCD)….but hey..robot vacuum cleaner, and I don’t have to vacuum! Edges may be sharp…and poisonous

On April 9, 2009, in Features, by RocketSled

The boy...he is so happy...probably had lead poisoning too. Like the kids of today! It’s funny where treasure is buried. Sometimes it’s just somewhere you always knew, but never looked at it in the right light. In this inaugural posting, I’d like to call your attention to the following 1960′s era Sears Microscope: (more…)
